SPF roofing for energy-efficient flat-roof systems
Sprayed polyurethane foam (SPF) is one of the best flat-roof systems for the Coachella Valley. The foam goes down as a seamless, insulating, fully-adhered layer, then gets topcoated with a reflective elastomeric. The result is a roof with no seams to fail and a strong R-value built in.
How SPF actually works
Closed-cell polyurethane foam is sprayed onto a prepared roof deck where it expands and cures into a continuous monolithic layer. The foam itself is the waterproofing and the insulation. A silicone or acrylic elastomeric topcoat is then applied over the foam to protect it from UV and add reflectivity.
Why it works in the desert
- No seams, the most common point of failure on any flat roof
- High R-value insulation built into the roof system
- Self-flashes around penetrations, drains, and parapets
- Lightweight, can install over most existing flat-roof substrates
- Re-coatable, so the system lifespan can be extended indefinitely
Maintenance and lifespan
An SPF roof with a fresh elastomeric topcoat typically lasts 15 to 20 years before needing a re-coat. The foam underneath, properly protected, can outlast the building. Re-coating every 7 to 10 years keeps the system performing.
